Ernest Lanning

December 1, 1936 — July 1, 2020

Ernest Ray Lanning, 83 of Lexington, NC passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at his residence.

He was born December 1, 1936 in Rowan County to the late George Alexander Lanning and Lillian Kluttz Lanning.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne Tysinger Lanning of 53 years; two daughters, Lisa Johnson (Skip) and Debbie McDaniel (Ronnie); one brother, Melvin Lanning (Donna) of  Hampton, VA; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Marty Munger, and one brother, “Walt” Walter Lawrence Lanning.

He was a graduate of Spencer High School and a proud Veteran of the US Navy serving on the USS Midway and retired from Norfolk Southern Railway.  He and his wife loved camping more than anything and spending time with grandchildren and having family cookouts.  He loved the outdoors from playing cornhole, fishing or traveling.

He is known all around for his beautiful birdhouses and many unique wood carvings from boots to carousel horses.  He was very talented in many ways.  We will forever cherish his carvings and unique furniture he built.  He loved to laugh, watch Westerns and always made a friend wherever he was.

A private military graveside service will be held Sunday, July 5 th at Bethany United Methodist Church.
