Eugene Lloyd Putnam

Eugene Lloyd Putnam, age 94, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Alston Brook Nursing Home. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the church, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Tyro United Methodist Church, 4484 South NC Highway 150, Lexington, NC with Rev. Randy Foster officiating. Interment will follow at Bethel Cemetery. He was born on February 26, 1923 in Cleveland County, NC to the late Edgar C. and Vera Hamrick Putnam. He was a graduate of Lexington High School and a veteran of the US Army. A member of the “Greatest Generation”, he served honorably during World War II in Patton’s Third Army Artillery. He was later employed by Johnson Motor Lines and Coble Dairy as a truck driver and mechanic. He was a member of Tyro United Methodist Church, where he taught the Willie Meacham Men’s Sunday School Class for many years.  A simple and humble man, “Gene” enjoyed tinkering with cars and trucks, gardening and visiting with friends and family on his porch. He was well known and was a friend to many people in his home community of Tyro. He was preceded in death by his wife Eloise Davis Putnam, a brother, Howard Putnam and sister, Pauline Wilson. He is survived by his son Andrew Putnam (Kathy) of Lexington; his daughters, Scott Rhodes (Gary) of Salisbury and Judy Sanders (Charles) of Monroe; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Special thanks to the staff of Alston Brook for their years of compassionate care for Mr. Putnam. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tyro United Methodist Church, 4484 South Highway 150, Lexington, NC 27295 or to Hospice of Davidson County.
