Evelyn Cline Roach

September 2, 1924 — May 5, 2014

Evelyn Cline Roach, 89, of Lexington, died peacefully at home on Monday, May 5, 2014. The celebration of her life will be held on Friday, May 9, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kelley Groce officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 pm at the church. Interment will take place at Lexington City Cemetery immediately following the service.  Mrs. Roach was born in Winston Salem  on September 2, 1924 to the late Rev. Dr. John Cline and Kitty Plott Cline. Mrs. Roach is a graduate of Duke University where she sang in the Duke Chapel Choir and was a member of Alpha Chi Omega. It was there that she met and married her husband of 50 years, the late Dr. Henry Herman Roach, Jr. Mrs. Roach spent her career helping others as a social worker for the Davidson County Department of Social Services, Baptist Children's Home of Thomasville, and Davidson County Mental Health Center.  She also spent time teaching in the Adult Basic Education program. Her greatest joy, however, came from being a devoted wife and a loving mother. As a Methodist “preacher's kid,” she spent her life serving God in and through the church and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lexington for more than 60 years where she served on the Administrative Board, the Altar Guild, and taught Sunday School. She was an Honorary Life member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Lexington Charity League. In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Roach was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Kitty and Finley Cox, her brother, Rev. John M. Cline, son-in-law, Dick Switzer, in-laws, Herman Roach, Sr. & Kate McGehee Roach, Carlton & Sarah Dixon, and Will & Joyce Roach. Mrs. Roach is survived by her daughters, Frances Sink and husband, Varner, and Nancy Roach, of Lexington, and Rev. Betsy Switzer, of Benton, TN, sister-in-law, Alice Cline, and six special nieces and nephews.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, the Dr. Herman Roach Student Support Fund at Davidson County Community College, Hospice of Davidson County or charity of choice.
