Evelyn Brown Tate, 83, of Evergreen Avenue, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at Hinkle Hospice House.
A service to celebrate Evelyn's life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church by Dr. Ray Howell III and the Rev. Tommy Wilson. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends in the sanctuary following the service.
Evelyn was born on Feb. 12, 1927, in Bristol, Va., to Major Tolliver Brown and Orpha Catherine Brown. She attended Appalachian State and Women's College of Greensboro and worked as a secretary before becoming a homemaker. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a lifetime caregiver to those in need. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church where she taught high school girls' Sunday school class and faithfully participated in various church activities. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; two sisters; and a granddaughter, Annie Catherine Everhart.
She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Robert Tate; two daughters, Nan Yonts and Susan Tucker and husband Lewis, all of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Zachary Hall, Daniel Hall and Lindsay (Clayton) Nichols; two stepgrandchildren, Shawn (Donna) Tucker and Cameron (Kimberly) Tucker; and four stepgreat-grandchildren, Jacob, Luke, Carlie and Morgan.
