James “Farrell” Hinkle, 78, of Welcome passed away on October 9, 2022, surrounded by his family. A celebration of life will be 3:00 pm Sunday, October 16, 2022, at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel conducted by Pastor Jay Bowers. The family will see friends following the service.
Farrell was born November 23, 1943, in Davidson County to the late Grover Clayton Hinkle and Mary Beatrice Jordan Hinkle. He was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Steve Hinkle, and a sister, Karen Hinkle.
Anyone who knew Farrell was aware of his quick wit and sense of humor. He had a smart comment for everything but never in an offensive way. He was a lifelong Nascar fan, serving on the pit crew for Richard Childress in the 1970s, painting, and lettering many cars, and ultimately designing the famous number 3 that graced Dale Earnhardt’s car. When able, he liked to play golf, enjoying the company of his friends as much if not more than the game itself. As a self-employed paint contractor, he worked tirelessly to build his business and provide for his family well past the time he should have retired. He took great joy in spending time with his family and friends keeping them laughing and entertained. He will be missed by many.
Surviving are his loving wife, Ruth Ann Wooten Hinkle of the home, and his daughters, Tamera Holcomb (Mark) and Nicole Hinkle (John Caleb Yarbrough). Also, surviving are two grandchildren, Ty Davis Holcomb and Alli Jordan Holcomb, his brother, Gary Hinkle, and a sister-in-law, Paula Hinkle.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
