The Lord saw that you were weak and weary, tired of life’s battles big and small, so He reached down from Heaven’s glory and gently took His good and faithful servant home.
Foy Thurston Hanes, 91, was called home to Heaven Wednesday, February 23, 2011.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2011, at Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2840 Friendship Church Road, by the Rev. Patrick Snow. There will be no formal visitation, however, Mr. Hanes will be available for viewing after 3 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2011, at Davidson Funeral Home.
Mr. Hanes was born in Davidson County, March 11, 1919, to Thurston Titus Hanes and Minnie Victoria Leonard Hanes. He was raised and worked as a farmer until drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He entered into service in 1942 and was assigned to the 43rd Infantry Division. Foy rose to the rank of Corporal before being honorably discharged in 1945. His service was in the Pacific campaign and he received among other honors, the Bronze Star for heroism in ground combat on January 14, 1945, at Luzon, Philippine Islands. After returning home, he resumed farming and later worked for the N.C. Department of Transportation, Maintenance Division, from which he retired after 16 years of service. Foy loved the Lord, his family and his many friends. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures and enjoyed family occasions, sitting on the porch in the evening, listening to Bluegrass music and visits from friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by grandson, Jeffrey Hanes; sister, Vetus Hanes Koonts; and five brothers, Oake Hanes, Duff Hanes, Cleveland Hanes, Melvin Hanes, and Ervin Hanes.
Foy is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Katherine Poole Hanes of the home; two sons, Ronnie V. Hanes and wife, Kay, and Terry W. Hanes and wife, Nita; grandson, Jeremy Hanes and wife, Jessica; great-grandson, Hunter Hanes; and many nieces and nephews.

Loving husband, adoring father, we will love and miss you always. Rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord until we meet again.
