Fred Henry Lanning

Fred Henry Lanning, 73, of Old Linwood Road, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at his home after two years of declining health. The funeral will begin at 4 p.m. Monday at Smith Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member, led by the Revs. Terry Smith and Greg Barefoot. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside rights by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Mr. Lanning was born April 2, 1933, in Rowan County to Walter Addison Lanning and Carrie Clement Lanning. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad and North Carolina Finishing Company, worked as a barber and worked with the Travel Center at Bill's Truck Stop. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Vernon Lanning and Tommy Lanning. Surviving are his wife, Nina Murdock Lanning of the home; one son, Brad Jeffrey Sr. and Lisa Lanning of Lexington; one daughter, Charlene Lanning Anderson of Linwood; three grandchildren, Crystal Dawn Lanning of Salisbury, Brad Jeffrey Lanning II of China Grove and Tyler Ross Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Michael Wayne Gonsalves and Marc Dale Austin; and special friends Rocky Korn of Lexington and Bob Walser of Linwood. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington and at other times at the home. Memorials may be directed to Smith Grove Baptist Church, 3462 Sowers Road, Linwood, NC 27299 or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Rowan County, 512 Kulmac Road, Suite 3, Salisbury, NC 28144.
