Gary “Coach” Hankins, age 56, of Park Lane, Lexington, passed away suddenly Monday (October 11, 2010) at Lexington Memorial Hospital. A celebration of his life will
be held 2:00 pm Saturday (October 16, 2010) at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Derek Boggs and Rev. David Shaffer officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 pm Saturday in the Family Life Center of First Lutheran Church and at other times at home.
Gary was born in Forsyth County, NC, May 2, 1954 to Dr. Joseph Banks Hankins and Nola Reed Hankins. He was a member of First Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of Lexington Senior High School and Catawba College. Coach Hankins, as he was known, retired from Lexington City Schools in 2009 after thirty years of teaching. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are: his wife, Shari Gobble Hankins of the home; his son, SGT. Phillip Matthew Williams (USMC) and wife Lisa, currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan; one granddaughter, Annabelle Grace Williams; two sisters, Patricia Hankins Plummer of Charlotte, Bebe Hankins Briggs and husband Ron of Lexington; one brother, Joseph Banks Hankins, Jr. and wife Marion of Lexington.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Lutheran Church, Family Life Center, PO Box 308, Lexington, NC 27293 or to Coggins Memorial Baptist Church, 1306 South Main Street, Lexington, NC 27292.
