George Lee Davis Jr.

Mr. George Lee Davis Jr., 69, passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 29, 2025. George was born three-and-a-half months premature on January 16, 1956 Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina. He was the first child of George Lee Davis and Jacqueline Mabe. George and his younger brother Jimmy, as well as their older half-brother Victor, were raised in foster homes off-and-on for several years. Eventually, George and Jimmy were both allowed by the court to be taken in by their grandparents, Troy Lee Davis and Lettie Langley Davis. George was raised at 313 Corliss Street in Greensboro for the rest of his formative years, graduating from Dudley High School in 1975. “Little George” had cognitive challenges in many ways due to the premature birth. But he was very intelligent in many ways and loved to play basketball. George didn’t really know his mother. She tried to abort him which caused the premature birth. As a result, however, George always had a love for babies and for young mothers at pregnancy centers. As a young man he worked for many years at various manufacturing companies in Lexington and Greensboro, beginning in June 1975. He worked many hard jobs such as unloading trucks, manufacturing brackets and rails, working as a machine loader, working with road-side rails, a wood stacker and other jobs at lumber yards. His final 12 years he worked on the manufacturing floor at Atrium Windows & Doors – now Cornerstone Building Brands. He retired from Atrium on August 30, 2019. George struggled for many years with drugs and alcohol addiction and strained all of his relationships with family and friends. He was easily taken advantage of financially for much of that time as well. About 30 years ago – in his mid-to-late 30’s – George trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. His life changed immediately. He was helped by his Aunt Vanza and Uncle Frank for many years during the 1990’s till their deaths in 2018 and 2015, respectively. With their guidance and advice, George was able to live independently in the older home that his grandparents had lived in, and then later his father had lived in. George loved his grandparents and his father and his aunt and uncle very much. He would have laid down his life for any of them, and he was always a kind and giving person. Again, many “friends” along the way occasionally took advantage of George’s kind heart. But he would always come back around when his “advisors” would reign him back in. The employees at the local bank in Tyro, North Carolina have always watched out for him. Thank you, Ladies! Many members of the Tryo community would recognize George as the man that always walked up and down the side of the road picking up cans. George attended church at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Welcome, North Carolina for many years. He would go and tell others about Jesus with church members often and sometimes would even go by himself. He wanted others to know what Jesus Christ had done for him, and how it had changed his life. He is survived by at least one niece, Shannon Denee Davis, and at least one nephew, Calvin Wayne Davis, both of Hickory, North Carolina. George is also survived by many cousins and friends. His grandmother Lettie Langley Davis was his caretaker for many years. In 1990 that privilege passed to Lettie’s daughter, (George’s Aunt) Vanza Davis Patterson. In 2018 that privilege passed to Vanza’s son, (George’s cousin) Wes Patterson. A special thanks is given to Brandon Shelly for being an extremely close and caring friend to George for the last two years. Brandon has lived with George for the last eight months providing day-to-day care in cleaning, feeding and dispensing medications. George desperately needed that help in the last years of his life. Thank you, Brandon. In addition to his parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles, George was predeceased by his father’s second wife – of 39 years – Bobbie Jane Saunders Davis, and also by both of his brothers, including half-brother Victor Lee Davis (1954-1990) and full brother James Wesley “Middle Jimmy” Davis (1957-2007). “Little George” was born at the weight of two pounds. But by God’s grace, he outlived his parents and both of his brothers. In two short weeks he would have turned 70. He was a miracle in so many ways. The funeral will be held at Davidson Funeral Home, 301 North Main Street, Lexington, North Carolina on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at 4:00 PM, with visitation prior to the service from 3:00 PM to 3:45 PM. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery the following day, Monday, January 5, 2026, at 3:00 PM (901 Wharton St., Greensboro, NC). In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice, or to Alpha Pregnancy Support of Lexington, North Carolina (George’s favorite charity).
