George Homer Koonts Jr., 63, of Hamlet Avenue, Carolina Beach, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Hospital in Wilmington after a sudden illness.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shiloh United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael Greer. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Koonts was born in Davidson County on Dec. 23, 1942, to George Homer Koonts Sr. and Thelma Potts Koonts. Before retirement he was an engineer with Southern Railway and was also a member of Federal Point Masonic Lodge 753 at Carolina Beach. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin stillborn brother and a sister.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Rose Koonts of the home; two sons, Larry Koonts and his wife, Rhonda, of Lexington and Elleck Vance and his wife, Casey, of Zebulon; five daughters, Patricia Wallace and her husband, Jamie, and Tamara Koonts McKnight, all of Lexington, Colleen Pfaler and Lauren Scott Carlyle and her husband, Thomas, all of Zebulon, and Renee Parry of Carolina Beach; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Flowers and memorials will be accepted. Memorials may be made to Shiloh UMC or to First Wesleyan Church.
