George Fisher Rowland

September 16, 1943 — June 20, 2021

On June 20, 2021, George F. Rowland Jr. was called home by his Lord and savior. A native of Philadelphia, PA; he was born on September 16, 1943, to George Fisher Rowland Sr., and Juanita Griffen Rowland.

In his teenage years, he developed an interest in electronics and communications and at age 17 when he became a licensed HAM radio operator. He was a graduate of Williamsport High School (PA) and attended Lycoming College majoring in mathematics. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Signal Corps stationed in Dominican Republic from 1963-66. He was inducted into the Freemasons in 1971 achieving York Rite in the Farmington Lodge, Advance NC.

Known as “Woody” (or by his call sign K4GEU) to friends, family, and colleagues, he married his high school sweetheart Susan Kay Williamson on March 5, 1964. After being honorably discharged from the military, he was employed as an electrical engineer and technical writer for Brown Engineering in Huntsville AL. In 1969 he moved his family to Winston-Salem, NC where he was employed with Western Electric in the engineering division. In 1975 he started his own firm; Woody’s Electronics in Advance, NC specializing in service and repair of electronic equipment. In 1981 he was employed with Carolinas Medical Supply as a technical writer. He returned to the electrical engineering field in 1988 being employed with AT& T (later Lucent Technologies) until his retirement in 1997.
He was called to the Christian faith being baptized on August 24, 1968. He became a member of Ardmore Church of Christ in Winston-Salem where he served as a deacon. He later embraced reformed doctrine becoming a member of Meadowview Reformed Presbyterian Church in Lexington, NC where he served in the car care ministry and lent his skills as self-taught woodworker in projects for the church and its members.

In addition to his wife Kay, he is survived by two daughters; Faith R. Hunt (husband William) of Shelby, NC, and Dawn R. Risher of Asheboro, NC., six grandchildren Isaac, Grace and Cana Hunt of Shelby, and Sarah, Thaddeus, and Caleb of Asheboro, and one great-grandchild Sophia.
