Gilbert Lee Powell, 81, of Sunset Boulevard, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Spruce Street Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member, by the Revs. Terry Coats and Mark Robertson. Burial will follow in Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro with military rites.
Mr. Powell was born January 23, 1926, in Person County to Archer Gates Powell and Rosa Clayton Powell. He was a retired store manager at Colonial Stores/Big Star Foods in Greensboro. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the masons. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Lewis Powell who died in 1976.
Surviving are his wife, Mable Apple Powell of the home; son, David Powell and wife, Donna, of Sophia; daughter, Carolyn Martin and husband, Jim, of Archdale; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home.
