Grady Ellis Scates Sr., 65, of Michael Alley, died Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at his home after a sudden illness.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Arrington Heights Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a member, by the Rev. Bradley Testerman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2012, at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Mr. Scates was born March 30, 1947, in Hampton County, Tenn., to Thomas Jefferson Scates and Mary Ann Bowden Scates. He was a machine operator for Binnings. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister.
Surviving are his loving wife, Shirley Jean Byerly Scates of the home; son Grady Ellis Scates Jr. of Lexington; daughters Margaret Breedlove of Randleman and Tammy Moore and husband Jonathan of Warren, Ohio; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen Touchstone and husband Dan of Lexington and Geraldine Ireland and husband Buddy and Lindy Kilgore, all of Tennessee.
