Hammett Lee Owens, 82, of Feezor Road, died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Wake Forest Baptist Health- Lexington Medical Center. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Stoner’s Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Pearson, Doug McGee, and Keith McGee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home. Mr. Owens was born February 1, 1929, in Davidson County, to Howard Cleveland Owens and Ida Vallie Myers Owens. He was a retired truck driver from Billings Freight and a member of Stoner’s Grove Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Betty Byerly Owens of the home; sons, Hammett Lee Owens Jr and wife, Jeanette of Hobbs, NM, and Ben Owens and wife, Lynn, of Advance; daughters, Rebecca Hristopoulos and husband, George of Farmington, NM, and Lynn Owens Fletcher and husband, Scott, of Lexington; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one surviving brother, Arnold Owens of Lexington. Memorials may be made to Carolina Cancer Services, 25 W. 6th Avenue, Lexington, NC 27292; or Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
