Harold Sanford Carter

January 17, 1925 — June 28, 2011

Harold Sanford Carter, 86 of Lexington died Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Hinkle Hospice House. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Sosebee officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, 349 College Blvd, Thomasville. Mr. Carter was born in Guilford County on January 17, 1925 to Delmer Glenn Carter and Sallie Childress Carter. He was a member of St. Timothy’s United Methodist Church. He played baseball for Dacatoh Mill Team and was scouted by the Cleveland Indians to play pro ball, but he chose to serve our country during WWII joining the US Navy and was stationed on the USS Bronstein DE189 sinking more German Subs than any other in the Navy at that time. He returned to Lexington and married his childhood sweetheart, Maxine Jordan. They were married for 61 years before she passed away in 2007. He began a career in printing at the Denton Paper and later worked at the Children’s Home in Thomasville, until he was hired at The Dispatch where he worked for 37 years before retiring at age 70. Mr. Carter was an avid golfer having won several Dispatch golf tournaments. Surviving are son, Wayne (Rock) Carter, owner of The Clubhouse Restaurant, in N. Myrtle Beach, SC, and his friend, Sara; daughter Wanda Carter Odell who is employed with Davidson Funeral Home and her husband, Frank; two grandchildren, Christy Odell Murphy and husband, Ramu, of Kernersville and Jennifer Odell Meehan and husband, Charles, of Charlotte, three great-grandchildren, Ayanna Hoper; Laiden Murphy and Jude Murphy whom were his pride and joy. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
