Henry Cletus Koonts, Jr., 93, of Idlewild Drive, died Monday, December 22 at the Hinkle Hospice House after a brief illness.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 28, 2014, at the Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, by the Rev. Robin Keating. Burial will follow at the Lexington City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home of his daughter on West Second Avenue.
Mr. Koonts was born December 18, 1921, in Davidson County to Henry Cletus Koonts and Mary Alice Smith Koonts. He was a graduate of Lexington High School and Wake Forest School of Business. Mr. Koonts proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was retired Superintendent at Carolina Panel Company; a Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Wilfred Fritts and later continued his career in law enforcement when serving five years at the Lexington Police Department under Chief VG Price Sr. He was a member of the American Legion Post 8, VFW Post 1473, and Amvets Post 13. In addition to his parents his wife, Rachael Myers Koonts, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughter, Dawn Koonts Shaak and husband, Bob, of Lexington; two grandchildren, Raeann Biesecker of Lexington and John Robert “Rob” Shaak and wife, Betsy, of Charleston, WVa; and four great-grandchildren, Holt Biesecker, Noah, Chloe and Mary Taylor Shaak.
