Helen Haynes Strader

Mrs. Helen Haynes Strader died on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Lexington Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 3 at First United Methodist Church by the Revs. Kelley Groce and Dr. Lee Dukes, III. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church fellowship hall. Mrs. Strader was born April 3, 1933 in Reidsville to Lewis Elmer “Dick” Haynes and Alice Wilkinson “Billie” Haynes. She was a graduate of Reidsville High School and the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where she was class speaker at her graduation in 1955. She taught in NC public schools in Durham and Lexington. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lexington, where she was a longtime member of the Choir, a member of the United Methodist Women, and gave devoted service to the Altar Guild. Her community involvement included membership in the Charity League, the Lexington Garden Club, the Lexington Music Study Club, the O’Henry Study Club and the Lexington Women’s Investment Club. She was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. Her infant brother, Richard Haynes, her parents, and her granddaughter, Alice Elizabeth Hancock, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Hunter G. Strader, Jr. M.D.; her sons, H. Gregg Strader and wife, Sara E. Stoneburner, M.D. of Greensboro, and Richard H. Strader and wife, Ann Womble Strader of Atlanta, GA; her daughter, Pamela L. Strader and her husband, Joseph A. Wood, III of Greensboro; and seven grandchildren, Ashley Strader, Hunter Strader, Haynes Strader, Jane Strader, Olivia Strader, Brian Wood and Mary Helen Wood. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 310 S. Main St., Lexington NC 27292.
