Mrs. Helen Eulala Hunt Surratt, age 100, died Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Lexington Medical Center.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2026, at Floral Garden Park Cemetery with Rev. Don Clement officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, August 27, at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington.
She was born on January 26, 1926, in Davidson County, to the late Grover Early and Minnie Eulala Kepley Hunt.
From an early age, Helen was raised on a farm, thus she loved the sounds of the animals. She loved being outdoors and working in her flower gardens. She really had a green thumb. Helen grew green beans one summer; one grew to about two feet long. The High Point Enterprise came out to document the story. She enjoyed riding her three-wheeled Schwinn bicycle and exercising to her Joni workout tapes in the 70s and 80s. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed listening to music, especially Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion, Elvis, and Christmas music. Most of all, she loved her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Bunch Surratt, Jr.; siblings, Virginia, Dave, James and Junior; aunts, Rose and Daisy; son-in-law, Charles Hedrick; nephews and their wives, Bill Surratt (Brenda) and Greyling Surratt (Sandy); her great-niece, Michele Surratt; sisters-in-law, Bessie Lee Young (Eugene), Gertrude Myers (Druid); and a brother-in-law, Keith Surratt.
Survivors include her five children, her beautiful firstborn daughter, Rita Gaynette Hedrick, her handsome second-born son, Walter Gregory Surratt (Belinda), her second-born beautiful daughter, Dawn Carolotta Surratt, her second-born son, Cubby Bunch Surratt (Teresa), and her lastborn child, a handsome son, Scott Dean Surratt; grandchildren, Angela Hedrick (Stacy), Chodd Hedrick (Caroline), Shawn Hedrick (Kendra), Joel Surratt (Stephanie), Christopher Surratt, Brian Surratt, and Darren Surratt; great-grandchildren, Colton English (Ashley), Miranda Hughes (Devon), Sarah Hedrick, Tiffany Oetjens (Kyle), Brandon Surratt, Justin Surratt, Dakota Surratt, Mattie Surratt, Carter Surratt, Lola Surratt, Elijah Surratt, Sydney Surratt, and Zach Surratt; great-great-grandchildren, Lawson English, Mitchell English, Riley Dobbins, Ryder Dobbins, Zach Dobbins, Carson Hedrick, Everly Hedrick, Lyme Oetjens, Lily Grace Surratt, and Waylon Bracey; nieces and nephews, Jon Myers and family, Tracy Rabon (Lisa), Jason Surratt (Amanda), Graylyn, Gwendolyn, Gracelyn, Jameson, Laken, Kaydence, Preston; and many other members of the Hunt family.
