Lexington, NC – Herman Webster Byrd, a devoted husband, father, and a retired serviceman of the U.S. Navy, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2025, at the age of 84. He was born on Sunday, February 16, 1941, in Lexington, North Carolina, where he spent most of his life contributing to his community and supporting his family. Herman was the beloved son of the late Grady Willard Byrd and Hazel Jordan Byrd and was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Ursula Byrd and brother Roger Wayne Byrd. In his lifetime, Herman was a dedicated family man who found joy in the company of his son and nephews. Left to honor and remember him are his son, Denny Byrd of Jacksonville, FL; his nephew, Terry Byrd (Stacy), of Lexington; as well as his nephew, Jeffery Byrd, and niece-in-law, Brandy Byrd of Lexington. Herman answered the call of duty and served his nation with distinction in the U.S. Navy for an impressive 30 years. After his honorable and decorated career in the U.S. Military Forces, he retired, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and valiant service. Beyond his professional achievements, Herman lived a life rich with simple pleasures and hobbies he loved. He was particularly fond of bowling. Additionally, he had a green thumb for gardening. An avid animal lover, Herman's home was always a welcome haven to creatures big and small. Known as a "Jack of All Trades," he was skilled in fixing, building, and bringing to life anything he envisioned, much to the admiration of family and friends. In honor of this esteemed veteran, Herman Webster Byrd will be remembered not only for his military service but also for the wonderful qualities that defined his character—a true gentleman whose life was a testament to service, family dedication, and an unyielding love for life's little joys.
