Mr. Hollis Samuel Lanning, 93, passed away Thursday, June 04, 2009, at Hospice of Davidson County, Hinkle Hospice House.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 7, 2009, at Shiloh United Methodist Church with the Revs. Matt Farabow and Hunter Duncan officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at Forest Hill Memorial Park.
Mr. Lanning was born January 2, 1916, in Davidson County, to the late William Obie and Sarah Beck Lanning. Mr. Lanning worked as a foreman at Dixie Furniture Company for 39 years, was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee, steward, chairman of the building committee when present building was completed in 1960, and was a member of Masonic Lodge 473 for 52 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 73 years, Mildred Sink Lanning on May 2, 2009; two brothers, Lloyd and Herman Lanning; and a sister, Pauline Swicegood.
Surviving are a son, Hoy Lanning, Sr. and wife, Kathy; two daughters, Treva Cope and husband, Roy, and Ruth Oliver and husband, Jim, all of Lexington; 12 grandchildren, Hoy Lanning Jr. and wife, Gwen, Kevin Lanning, Paula Downs and husband, Roy, Kim Miller and husband, Andy, Doug Cope and wife, Kim, Shannon Snider and wife, Kelly, Darrell Cope and wife, Renee, Phil Lanning and wife, Kim, Hollis Papale and husband, Adam, Millie Smith and husband, Jamey, Jamye Duncan and husband, Hunter, and Jennie Gooding and husband, Benji; one step grandchild, Carolyn Oliver; 24 great-grandchildren; and 6 step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Willie Lanning and wife, Lucille; and one sister, Mary Etta Parks, all of Lexington.
The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Davidson Funeral Home.
