Holman Edsol Owney

Major Holman Edsol Owney, Retired, age 91 of Homestead Drive, Lexington passed away Sunday night (June 13, 2010) at Lexington Memorial Hospital. A graveside inurment service will be held at 11:00 am Friday (June 18, 2010) at Salisbury National Cemetery by Chaplain Ethel Barnberg-Revis officiating.  Inurnment will follow in the Columbarium with Full Military Honors. Holman was born in Bath County, Kentucky January 26, 1919 to Oscar York Owney and Ethel Vice Owney. He was a member of The Christian Church in Owingsville, KY. His military career began with service in World War II. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart from injuries received during the war. A member of VFW Post 3074, DAV Chapter 39, Life member of Military Order of the Purple Heart and Retired Officers Association.  He was the recipient of the Bronze Star Army  Commendation with 2 clusters and the combat Infantry Badge.  His honors include the Kentucky Colonel and the Commenorative medal of the Rhine at Danube by the French Government.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, John Charles Owney, a daughter, Gloria Ann Owney, two brothers and two sisters. Surviving are; his wife, Shirley Lohman Owney of the home, three daughters, Janice Rayburn husband Billy Joe of Trinity, Susan Owney of Linwood and Gerda Bowman and husband Mac of Greenville, SC; four sons, William (Bill) Owney and wife Patricia of Atlanta, TX, Konrad Kmentt and wife Teresa of Welcome, Karl Kmentt of Linwood and Kim Kmentt of Maui, Hawaii; gradson Corey Owney of Lexington; four other grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family will be at home.
