Richard Horace Conner, 87, of Birkdale Drive, died Saturday, November 16 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a brief illness.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, by the Revs. Dr. Ray Howell and Tommy Wilson. Burial with military rites will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Mr. Conner was born March 4, 1926 in Lenoir County to John and Mollie Bunn Conner. He retired from Lance after more than 30 years of service. He also sold Christmas trees for many years. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and was an active member of the Fellowship Sunday School class. Mr. Conner was also a veteran of the US Navy, having served in the Pacific campaign during World War II. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 696, the VFW, and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Janet Greer Conner; his brothers, John Conner, James Conner, Rom Conner, Bobby Conner, and J.D. Conner; and his sisters, Bessie Lewis, Minnie Grant, Doris Scott, Ruth Bates, and Helen Bray.
He is survived by his wife, Miriam Stroud Conner, whom he married on November 17, 1947, of the home; his sons, R. Horace Conner, Jr. and wife, Kathy, and Neal Conner, both of Lexington; his daughters, Nona Fitzpatrick of Lexington, and Suzy Conner of Winston-Salem; his brother, Joseph P. Conner of Timberlake, NC; his grandchildren, Richard Horace “Rick” Conner, III and wife, Taylor, of Harrisburg, Benjamin Jay Conner and wife, Whitney, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Neal Patrick Conner of Charlotte; and his great-grandchildren, Callen Wilson Conner and Greer Elizabeth Conner.
