Howard John Shone, 85 of New London, NC died Wednesday May 16, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC after a sudden illness. A funeral service will be held Sunday May 20, 2012 at 3:00 PM in Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Blanton officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service.
Howard was born in Williamstown, NJ on September 5, 1926 to John William Shone and Lavinia Brown Shone. A graduate of Glassboro High School in 1944, Howard served as President of his class for four years. Howard retired as Plant Manager of Huntsman Corporation’s facility in Woodbury, NJ after a long career of service and achievement with Shell Chemical Company and Huntsman Corporation.
Howard was a beloved member of Macedonia United Methodist Church and lovingly served as Lay Leader, Sunday School teacher, Lay Delegate for the Western North Carolina United Methodist Church Conference and Chairman of the Building Committee.
Howard was a Navy Veteran of World War II serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was proud to serve on the USS Caldwell and earned the distinction of a “tin can sailor”.
One of five children, Howard was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Raymond Shone and Edwin Shone and his sisters, Gladys Hahn and Belinda Ormsby.
Surviving Howard is his life-long love and wife of sixty five years, Helen Bullock Shone. Howard’s legacy continues on through his children: Eileen Ruth Shone Grimshaw and husband Steven of Richwood, NJ; Thomas James Shone and wife Andrea of Mocksville, NC; Susann Edith Shone Griffith and husband David of Monroeville, NJ; Judith Diana Shone-Tamaska and husband Wayne of Glassboro, NJ; and, Jennifer-Bullock Shone and husband Daniel Jaramillo of Fort Mill, SC. Howard and Helen are proud grandparents to: Joshua, Katherine, Melissa and Joel Grimshaw; Luke and Jonathan Griffith; Noah and Caleb Tamaska; and Finn Jaramillo. The joy of five great grandchildren complete the family, to date.
