Howard Kelly Twyne

Howard Kelly Twyne, age 94, of Winston- Salem died early Thursday morning in the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice home in Winston-Salem after a short illness. A funeral service will be 11am Saturday September 13, at Union Ridge United Methodist Church where he was a member conducted by Revs. Edna Riggs and Cathy Davis burial will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside rights by VFW Memorial Honor Guard. Mr. Twyne was born January 23, 1914 in Manteo NC to George B. and Bernie Rodgers Twyne. In his early years he worked as an illustrator for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Dare Co, He enjoyed writing plays and acting in the first years of The Lost Colony production. Howard joined the Navy in 1940 and served aboard the USS Phoenix in the Pacific Fleet and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. After WWII, Howard moved to Winston –Salem and began his career as watchmaker/jeweler. In 1948 he married the love of his life, Edna Leonard, who proceeded him in death on May 28, 2004. In recent years, Howard enjoyed good health, lunch at K&W, and attending his church. “Everybody misses a Sunday now and then except Howard.” Now Howard has moved on from painting land and seascapes for his family and friends to painting Heavenscapes for his loving Father. He is survived by a daughter Becky Head and husband Rudy of Winston-Salem; one brother Donnie Twyne and wife Lois of Manteo NC; and two grandchildren Andy and Allison Kelly Head. Visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday September 12, at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel, 858 Hickory Tree Road, Winston-Salem. Memorials may be made to Union Ridge United Methodist Church 3620 Old Lexington Road, Winston-Salem NC 27107. Special thanks to Hospice, Judy Johns and his family and friends.
