Hubert Ethridge Olive

Hubert Ethridge Olive, 94, of Piedmont Crossing, Thomasville and formerly of Lexington, NC, passed away on October 22, 2023.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, October 26th at First Baptist Church, West Third Avenue, Lexington, NC by Dr. Ray Howell, III and Reverend Tommy Wilson. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall after the service.

Hubert was born in Lexington on January 1, 1929, to Hubert E. Olive, Sr. and Anne Southerland Olive. He was a graduate of Lexington Senior High in 1947, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1953. After graduation, he served as a First Lieutenant with the Army Judge Advocate General Corps for three years. He practiced law in Lexington from 1957 until elected District Court Judge of the 22nd Judicial District Court in 1970. He served until his retirement in 1981. He served as Chairman of the Lexington District of Boy Scouts of America, member of the Board of Directors of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, on the Board of the Lexington United Way, and on the Board of Lexington Habitat for Humanity and Board of Directors of Perpetual Savings and Loan and Fidelity Bank. In 1964, he was chosen Young Man of the Year by the Lexington Jaycees. Hubert was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, where he had served as moderator of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School Superintendent, and taught Sunday School for over fifty years. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Charlotte Anne Olive, and Virginia Olive Hartzog.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Hodgin Olive of the home, son Robert Southerland Olive and wife Ruby of Cumming, GA and daughter Catherine Olive Bowers and husband Jeff of Lexington; grandson Justin Southerland Olive and wife Abigale, granddaughters Mary Catherine Olive Beutel and husband Jim, Sarah Bowers Lanier and husband Jerry, and Allyson Bowers Martin and husband Daniel and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 436, Lexington, NC 27293 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
