J. W. Beck

James Walter “J.W.” Beck Jr., of Bethany Road, died Sunday, May 7, at Beacon Place Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.   The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 12 at Lexington Church of Christ by Brock Shanks. Burial will follow in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.   Mr. Beck was born March 23, 1932, in Davidson County, to James Walter Beck Sr. and Lida May Burgess Beck. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and was a member of Lexington Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Thomas “Tommy” Beck on December 22, 1966; a brother, Jack Beck; and sisters, Jessie Beck Misenheimer, Margaret Beck, and Mary Frances Chaffin.   Surviving are his loving wife, Mary Ann Shipton Beck of the home; daughter, Betty Ann Beck Verdell of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Kendrah Verdell, Donnie Verdell Jr., and Yolanda Verdell; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, David Beck and wife Betty of Lexington, Richard Beck and Johnny Beck; sisters, Selma Loflin of Denton and Diane Houck and husband Don of West Jefferson; and a host of nieces and nephews.   Memorials may be made to Beacon Place/Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2502 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405.
