Jacqueline Sadie Steelman

April 10, 1933 — June 21, 2024

Jacqueline (Jackie) Sadie Biggerstaff Steelman 91 of Midway, NC, passed from her physical to eternal home on June 21, 2024 Jackie was born on April 10, 1933, in Lenoir, NC, to Elmer Thomas Biggerstaff, Sr., and Annie Mae Huss Biggerstaff. She was a 1952 graduate of Lenoir High School and stated in her senior yearbook, "Eastward bound to Carolina to get a BS Degree. But the road looks steep and rough to me." Jackie moved eastward to Winston-Salem, NC, and attended City Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1955 with a B.S. in Nursing. Jackie began her nursing career at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, NC, then returned to Winston-Salem, where she worked in Public Health, Labor and Delivery, the E.R., and as a pediatric nurse for Dr. William Hershey Davis, Jr. She ended her well-rounded career in 1999 as a corporate nurse with AMP Inc. While in nursing school, Jackie was introduced to the love of her life, Bobby Ray Steelman, by classmate, Peggy Cecil. They were married for 67 years. They were active and highly respected Midway United Methodist Church members during this time. Jackie loved the church and her many friends there. She lived out her calling by using her talents in various ways. She was a member of the Lelia Nifong United Methodist Women's Circle, a team member rebuilding flood-damaged homes in the eastern part of N.C., and a participant in annual bazaars, community BBQ dinners, trunk or treat, yard sales, seasonal festivals, and gatherings, feeding those in need and making chicken pies to pay off the Family Life Center mortgage. Additionally, Jackie served as the hospitality committee chair for many years. Baking was another passion for Jackie. It wasn't uncommon for her to deliver cakes to friends who were celebrating a birthday, in a time of need, or as an outreach. A memorable moment was when she received a first-place ribbon in the Dixie Classic Fair Cake Competition. Eating one of her homemade cakes or sourdough rolls will always hold a special place in her family's hearts. Jackie is survived by her daughter Adelia Phillips (Dan) of Huntersville, NC, and Bobbie McCann (Stephen) of Charlotte, NC. Five Grandchildren that called her Nana: Elizabeth Boyd (Eliot), Daniel Phillips (Ragan), Anna Flis (Brian), Avery Brunk (Lisa), Charlie Blanton (English), and six Great-Grand Children: Ava, Jeb, Carter, Hayes, Tatumn, and Anna Jane. In addition to her parents, Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Ray Steelman, daughter, Anna Steelman Blanton, and brother, Elmer Thomas Biggerstaff, Jr. The family is grateful for the loving care provided by Dr. Stacey Haponik, MD, who practices Internal medicine in Huntersville, NC, Summit Place of South Park Assisted Living, VIA Hospice Partners, and Sunrise on Providence Assisted Living.
