James Franklin Canter

James Franklin Canter, age 87,  fondly known as “Sonny” passed away on December 6, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on December 5, 1936, in Wilkes County, NC, to Lonnie and Bessie Canter.

James proudly served his country in the US Navy, and upon returning home he worked briefly at Western Electric before embarking on a dedicated career as an Ironworker for Swaim Ornamental Iron Works, Inc., where he contributed his skills until his well-earned retirement.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Anna Faye Sparks Canter, a grandson Taylor Welch, and a son-in-law, Claude Knight. James is survived by his son Steve Canter (Maria) of Concord, NC, three daughters Christi Rosendary (Quenton) of Clemmons, NC, Pattie Knight of Yadkinville, NC, Debbie Welch (Tony) of Advance, NC, two brothers, Gene Canter (Geraldine) of Winston-Salem, NC, and Doug Joyner (Lynne) of Sandy Ridge, NC. James leaves behind a legacy through his six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

James worked hard to provide for his family and instilled a strong work ethic in all of his children.  He loved spending time hunting with his son and grandchildren.  He was extremely proud of his family including, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral service, which will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, December 11, 2023, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel with Pastor Matthew Pope officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in James Franklin Canter's name.

May James rest in eternal peace, and may his memory live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
