James Harden Cockerham, Sr., 92, of Winston Salem, went to be with his Lord on Monday, March 31, 2014.
A memorial graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, April 3 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston Salem, by the Rev. Rod Sharpe.
Mr. Cockerham was born October 11, 1921 in Forsyth County to Harden Henderson Cockerham and Ada Nixon Cockerham. He professed his faith to the Lord in 1943, two weeks prior to entering World War II. In the US Army, he fought in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and the invasion of Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, he founded Cockerham & Bean Photography, and later, Jimmy’s Food Store, which he operated for 30 years. His brothers, Jack, Johnie, Francis, and Garner Cockerham, a sister, Mary Boles, a half brother, Raymond Cockerham, and his half sisters, Myrtle Bean, Pearl Vestal, and Ethel Nixon, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his sons, William K. Cockerham and wife, Connie, of Jamestown, and James Cockerham, Jr. of Winston Salem; his sister, Margarite Stevenson of Winston Salem; his granddaughter, Amy Elizabeth Martin, and husband, David; and his great grandchildren, Alex, Charlee-Kate, and Christian Martin.
