James Edmund “Jim” Burkhart, age 75, of Turner Road, Lexington passed away Thursday morning at Hinkle Hospice House after one week serious illness.
Funeral service will be 11:00 am Saturday (December 4, 2010) in the Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel with Rev. Tim Gainey officiating. Burial will be in Johnsontown United Methodist Church Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by Lexington City Police Department.
The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Friday and at other times at the home of his brother, 1975 East Holly Grove Road, Lexington.
Jim was born in Davidson County, June 21, 1935 to James Burkhart and Jeannie Lanning Burkhart. He was a retired Police Officer with the City of Lexington retiring in 1990 after which he worked for National Wholesale for ten years. He was a member of Second United Church of Christ where he was a devoted member of the Sco Burkhart Sunday School Class. He was a volunteer at Davis Townsend, Welcome Elementary and North Davidson Junior High. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing at Ocean Isle Beach. He served his country in the National Guard. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons James Randall Burkhart and Jeffrey L. Burkhart, one sister, Maxine Byerly, two brothers, Wayne and Danny Burkhart.
Surviving are: his Beloved wife Paula White Burkhart of the home; his son, Stanley M. Burkhart of Lexington; one step son, Joe White and wife Julie of Lexington; grandchildren, Beloved granddaughter, Tesla Burkhart, Austin White, Alex White, Asa White and Harley Everhart; three sisters, Bobbie West and husband Ken of Whiteville, Alma Wengender of Saint Louis, MO and Christine Reno of Lexington; one brother, Thad L. Burkhart and wife Dottie of Holly Grove community.
