James (Jim) Odell Kiger, Poppy to Lily, was transferred into eternity, September 2, 2014 after a brief illness at Grand Strand Regional Hospital in Myrtle Beach, SC with his family by his side. Jim was born June 24, 1944 to Robert Odell and Maude Adams Kiger. Growing up in Mocksville, NC Jim spent his childhood alongside his parents and his brother at the family store there. Jim was a proud graduate of Davie County High School, Class of 1962 and Winston-Salem Business College.
Jim proudly served in Vietnam with the 312th Medical Evacuation Unit, and retired from the Army and the Army National Guard as a Staff Sergeant with 20+ years of service. He proudly attended the Vietnam Veterans Homecoming at Charlotte Motor Speedway and was appreciative of everyone who thanked him for his service to our country. Jim was a proud member of the Midway Lions Club. He was honored with the Jack Stickley Award, Lions Club foundation. For 30+ years, Jim was a rural letter carrier for the US Postal Service in Advance, NC. Upon retirement, he worked at Davidson Funeral Home for 10+ years. He felt honored to serve the many families he met there, and to be a part of the Davidson Funeral Home family.
Growing up, Jim was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Mocksville, NC. When he and Linda married in 1981 he joined Urban Street Baptist Church (later known as Vernon Forest Baptist Church). He worked in the Awana program for several years and with the youth group in the Word of Life Program. He was currently a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, but attended First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bob. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife, Linda, greatly loved daughter, Abigail, precious granddaughter, Lily Gail and faithful son-in-law, Nicholas Paul, all of Myrtle Beach. He is also survived by a daughter, Andra Schwartz, son, Todd Kiger and four grandsons. He also leaves behind special aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom he loved.
A funeral service will held at 1:00 PM Friday, September 5, 2014 at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Billy Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park with military gravesite rites.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel.
