James Morris Johnson

March 19, 1929 — November 26, 2011

James “Jim” Morris Johnson, age 82, retired teacher, coach and administrator, passed away Saturday morning at his home. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday November 29, 2011 at Greer’s Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Renee Easter and Rev. Jimmy Myers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Monday November 28th at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Jim was born March 19, 1929 in Davidson County to Walter Thomas and Ruby Pauline Cranford Johnson, who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Western Carolina University, and retired, in 1991 from Davidson County Schools. He was a member of Greer’s Chapel United Methodist Church, where he previously served on various committees and was a member of the choir. He served in the United States Air Force, obtaining the rank of staff sergeant. Jim is survived by: his wife Carol Barber Johnson of the home whom he married December 24, 1968; daughter Debbie Goodman and husband Tim of Salisbury; grandchildren, Zach Thompson and fiancé Cassie Safrit of Salisbury, Christy Leonard of Lexington and Scott Leonard of Lexington; great-granddaughter Lauren Leonard of Lexington; brother Kenneth Johnson of Charlotte; nephews Barry and Tommy Johnson and their families; sisters-in-law, Mitzi Michael, Betty Tarleton, Willie Swing, Leila Craver; brother-in-law, Lanny Barber; multiple nephews and niece-in-laws. And finally by special friends Ron Richardson, Gil Buck, and Jonathan Reid. Memorials may be made to Greer’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 8195 Old Salisbury Road, Linwood, N.C. 27299 or Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, N.C. 27292. “Thank you, to all of our friends and family for your prayers, cards, calls and visits and a special thank you to the staff of Hospice of Davidson County.”
