James Walter Lawter Sr., 72, of West Center Street Extension, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at his home after three years of illness.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Freedom Baptist Church, where he was a member, by the Rev. Clyde Akers. Burial will be in Lexington City Cemetery.
Mr. Lawter was born July 29, 1934, in Spartanburg County, S.C., to James Bymaun Laughter and Pearl Mayfield Laughter. He was a former employee of Stanley Furniture.
Surviving are his wife, Janette Bean Lawter of the home; two sons, James W. Lawter Jr. of Winston-Salem and Douglas Wayne Lawter of the home; one brother, Robert Lawter of Lexington; one sister, Mary Tucker of Lexington; several nieces and nephews and church family; and adopted family members Larry and Donna Baker of Lexington.
The family will receive friends from noon until 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and other times at the home.
