James Lee Mays

April 11, 1927 — December 9, 2023

James Lee Mays, Sr. (Cannonball) was born and raised in a small community in Ringgold, Virginia.  He worked on the farm and met his wife. They were married 28 days after they met.  They raised 4 children and moved to Camden, New Jersey.  He was a devoted man to his wife and children.

He was a hard worker.  He worked as a prison guard, at Campbell Soup Company, a car wash and Mayflower van mover.  They eventually left New Jersey and moved to Reidsville, North Carolina.  He worked in Mill and Horn Construction and Cone Hospital in construction for many years. He also worked for Winn Dixie grocery store and retired from there.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Willie J. Mays and Georgia P. Mays, his wife Ruth E. Mays, a daughter Constance A. Farmer, sons-in-law Thomas Terrell and Thomas Farmer, and 8 sisters.

He is survived by 2 sons, James L. Mays, Jr., John E. Mays (Jackie), a daughter Tamera M. Terrell, 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in James’ name to the charity of your choice.

No funeral service will be held.
