James Ernest Melvin Jr., 80, of Manhattan Drive, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, by the Rev. Doug McGee. Burial will follow in Lexington City Cemetery.
Mr. Melvin was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Guilford County to James Ernest Melvin Sr. and Ardelle Flintom Melvin. He was a retired employee of Proctor and Swartz and a member of Arrington Heights Freewill Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Etrulia Melvin, on Feb. 25, 1996; a son, Max Melvin; and three brothers, Jack Melvin, Pete Melvin and Lee Melvin.
Surviving are a daughter, Laura Sue Godwin and her husband, Jesse, of Wilmington; a sister, Maureen Smothers of Greensboro; and a special friend, Annie Roberts of Lexington.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
