James Harwood Saunders Sr., 86, of Bridge Street, died Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 8, 2017, at New Hollywood Cemetery in Lumberton. The family will receive friends following the service. Mr. Saunders was born April 24, 1931, in Richmond County, to Charlie Harwood Saunders and Vinola Alford Dealany. He served in the U.S. Navy and later was a scheduler for Stone Container and a member of Coggins Baptist Church. Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years Myrtle “Novella” Herring Saunders of the home; son, James H. Saunders Jr. of Lexington; daughters, Patricia Gail Saunders and Angela D. Saunders, both of Lexington; grandchildren, Tricia Gaskell, Grayson Saunders, both of Lexington, Dakota Bryant of Greensboro, and Thomas C. Carey Jr. of New Albany, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Trista Gaskell and Mazie Gaskell, both of Lexington; and sister, Jenny Faye Byrd of Lumberton.
