Jane Gordon Shoaf Motlow, 95, of Lexington, NC, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2026, at the Hinkle Hospice House.
Born on November 3, 1930, in Lexington, NC, Jane was the daughter of the late Dr. Richard Reynolds Shoaf and Mildred Conrad Shoaf, both of Lexington.
From childhood, Jane’s natural talent in art cultivated her interest in drawing and painting, paving a rewarding course for her later in life. After graduating from Lexington Senior High School, Jane continued her education in art while attending Mary Baldwin, Salem College, and UNC-Chapel Hill. She taught art and art history in the Lexington City School system for eighteen years. Her impartial love for children also enriched her students’ lives with higher self-esteem.
Jane’s warm, engaging personality and generous spirit reflected her love of people, as she was one who never met a stranger. She only saw good in others and immensely enjoyed social interaction. She could often be found at the fountain of Lexington Drug with old and new friends.
Jane was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Lexington, and her strong faith shaped every part of her life.
In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by the father of her children, Theodore Elliott Motlow, Jr. of Lexington and a grandson, Izaak Reynolds Motlow of Tampa, FL.
Surviving children who continue to cherish their mom are her sons, Theodore Elliott Motlow, III (Holly) of Lexington and Richard Mark Motlow (Connie) of Lexington, and her daughter, Melody Williams (Alan) of Pawleys Island, SC.
Her legacy of love continues through her grandchildren: Theodore Elliott Motlow, IV, Melody Jane Motlow, Wesley Garrison (Ashley), Russell Garrison, Morgan Motlow Felber (Jason), Evan Motlow (Amanda), Eli Williams (Steph), and Emerson Williams (Zach). She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and a special cousin, Mollie McGuinn.
A private memorial service is planned. Memorials may be made to the Hinkle Hospice House of Davidson County or First Baptist Church of Lexington.
