Pamela Jane Webster Smith, our much beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, slipped away peacefully on Thursday, February 6, 2025. Jane was born to Mabel Lohr Webster and George Daniel Webster. When she was 11 years old, she became a big sister to Elizabeth Curry Webster. She was educated at Central Davidson High School in Lexington and Salem College in Winston-Salem.
She married her true love, Moyer Gray Smith, Sr. and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage for 62 years. They reared two sons and enjoyed spoiling six grandchildren.
Moyer spent a great part of his life in athletics as a coach, administrator, and fundraiser. Jane was his biggest supporter and cheerleader. She managed to juggle the demands of a coach’s wife while being a great mom. She welcomed her two daughters-in-law with open arms and was very supportive of them. Later, she became the sweetest “Grandmom” to her grandchildren, holding her own playing Batman as well as Barbie.
In her childhood, Jane attended Becks Lutheran Church. When Moyer’s career took them to Chapel Hill, they attended University United Methodist Church, where she was active in various capacities.
Jane enjoyed an active social life with dear friends in Chapel Hill. She became involved in the Chapel Hill Service League, the William C. Coker Garden Club, multiple bridge clubs, her investment club, and her birthday club. Jane was a die-hard Tar Heel sports fan. For many years, she enjoyed serving as a judge for the UNC Cheerleader tryouts. She was employed in the UNC Admissions Office where she made many lifelong friendships.
She was generous with her time and talents. Her beautiful floral arrangements could be seen at church, University, Ram’s Club, and non-profit events as well as at friends’ birthday celebrations, weddings, and parties. She was also known for sharing her delicious homemade pound cakes with family and friends on special occasions.
Jane was predeceased by her parents. Left to cherish her precious memory are her husband, Moyer Gray Smith, Sr. and her two sons Moyer Gray Smith, Jr. (Julianna) and Brenton Lohr Smith (Allison). She also is survived by her six beloved grandchildren, Moyer Gray Smith III, Jordan Alexander Smith, Taylor Boyd Smith (Madeline), Lillian Carder Smith, Brenton Lohr Smith, Jr. and Timothy Burnett Smith. She is survived by her dear sister, Elizabeth Webster Kepley (James), niece Sarah Elizabeth Kepley, brother-in-law Guy Patrick Smith (Melinda) and nieces Jennifer Calais Smith and Meredith Gray Smith, and many much-loved cousins and friends.
A celebration of her life will take place on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at Beck’s Reformed Church in Lexington at 2:00 pm. A reception in the church Fellowship Hall will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift in Jane’s memory to the North Carolina Botanical Garden, https://give.unc.edu/donate?&p=ncbg .
