Jay C. Kivett, age 91, of East US Highway 64 Lexington passed away peacefully Thursday night at Hinkle Hospice House surrounded by his family. A memorial service to celebrate his memory and honor his life will be held at 2:00 pm February 8, 2014 at Second Reformed United Church of Christ with Rev. Dr. William B. Shrout, Jr. officiating. Military honors by Davidson County Honor Guard will follow the church service and placement of his urn by the family will follow in the church Columbarium. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the placement of the urn. Jay was born in Guilford County January 23, 1923 to Ira Leslie and Etta Stroud Kivett. He was a member of Second Reformed United Church of Christ, member of the brotherhood and member of the Sco Burkhart Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of Lexington High School Class of 1941. He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries with 49 years of service. A veteran of WW II Army-Air Force as a Staff Sergeant he served as an Aerial Engineer Gunner of the 301st Bomb Group and flew 50 missions over the European Theater during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 3074 having served as Post Commander 1985-1986 and State Commander in 1986-1987 and served faithfully on the VFW Honor Guard burial detail as flag folder. He was honored as the oldest lifetime charter member of AMVETS Post 13. Jay was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, gardening and tinkering with and repairing clocks. He loved his great grandchildren and was excited that he would soon have three more, Mason Kivett (March); Blake Berrier (April) and Riley Horne (May). Jay is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Beck Kivett of the home; son, Greg Kivett (Vicki) of Greensboro; daughter, Donna Weisner (Tony) of Lexington; grandchildren, Brandon Kivett (Janet), Leigh Anne Horne (Adam), Megan Berrier (Brandon) and Elizabeth Weisner; great-grandchildren, Gunner Horne and Bryson Kivett; sister, Irene Hunt (James) of Maryville, TN; brother, Jack Kivett (Val) of McHenry, IL.; brother-in-laws, Alex (Charlotte), Leonard (Cindy) and Brasco Beck;and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ira and Richard Kivett In lieu of flowers, memorials should be directed to Second Reformed United Church of Christ, 330 North Church Street, Lexington, NC 27292 or to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292.
