Jerry Melvin Mayes, 81, of Davidson County, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at his home.
A memorial service will be 4:00 PM, Saturday, August 30, 2025 at Davidson Funeral Home. Family will visit with friends and family one hour prior to the service from 3:00 to 4:00 PM at the funeral home.
Jerry was born on February 6, 1944, in Iredell County, to the late Herman Wesley Mayes and Bera Mayberry Mayes. He worked for many years at M & L but tried his hand at many trades and mastered everything he set his mind to.
Jerry enjoyed being outside among nature whether it was by camping with his family, fishing in solitude, relaxing on the beach, or going crabbing as a youngster. He always found peace in the outdoors away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
His hobbies were numerous, however one of his most noted crafts was woodworking, and he created beautiful works of art that would also serve as functional pieces that his family still cherish. The home he built with his family will remain full of memories and love that was truly handcrafted.
Ever the open-minded person, Jerry was passionate about life and everything in it. He spent his days savoring the plethora of joys life offered such as food from around the globe, art and music, especially jazz, and meeting different people with their multifaceted cultures.
His greatest achievement, however, was his family. Jerry’s children regale one another with memories of how-hands on he was throughout their lives. No matter the season, he was there by running 5Ks with his daughter, conversing with his sons, participating in family gatherings during the holidays, playing with Gizmo the cat, or just being available. He was always present.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved fur babies, Max the dog, and Charlie the cat.
Left to carry on his legacy are his children, Bryan Mayes, Stephen Mayes, Nolan Mayes, of Lexington, Garrett Mayes, of Lexington, Jordan Hoover, of Walkertown, Michelle Benton (Roger), of Monroe, Claire Mayes, of Lexington, and Lydia Mayes, of Lexington; three grandchildren, Faith Benton, of Idaho, Olivia Benton, of Stallings, and Spencer Benton (Jaylynn) of Matthews; one great grandchild, Maisie Benton, of Stallings; and the mother of his children and close friend, Vickie Mayes.
Jerry’s life will always be remembered as one well lived, and those who knew and loved him will carry on his zest for all things great.
