Jesse Eugene Smith

On August 30, 2026, the world lost a bright spirit when Jesse Eugene Smith, 74, passed away.

Born in Sampson County, North Carolina, on June 20, 1952, Jesse was the son of Leroy and Mattie Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. Growing up as one of six boys shaped him into someone who loved deeply, laughed easily, and carried a strong sense of family throughout his life. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Franklin, Kenny, Darrell, and Howard.

Jesse shared a lifelong bond with his surviving brother, Albert Smith (and wife, Ellen). In these last two years, living closer allowed Jesse and Albert to spend more time together—sharing stories, laughter, and the kind of companionship only brothers truly understand.

Jesse adored people—watching them, teasing them, and making them smile. He found joy in simple pleasures: a quiet fishing spot, a fresh garden bed, a good race, a wrestling match, and time spent with the people he loved most.

He was a devoted husband to Debra “Debbie” Smith, a proud father to Johnny Smith and Tommy “Tonk” Smith (and wife, Joann), and a caring step‑father to Zachary Cox and Randy Harris. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Smith.

Jesse’s extended family also played a meaningful role in his life. His mother‑in‑law Christine Doss, brother‑in‑law Steve Doss (and wife, Jan), and sister‑in‑law Susan Spoon cared deeply for him and were lovingly involved in his care. He was also preceded in death by his father‑in‑law Harvey Doss, with whom he shared a special bond—fishing, cooking, eating, working on projects, and talking about the Bible.

His legacy continues through his grandchildren—Levi Smith, Savannah Nelson, Dallas Cox, Maisie Cox, Ezra O’Brien, and Annalee O’Brien—and his great‑grandchildren Layla Leonard, Colt Cox, and Braelee Orrell.

His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he treasured his Suncoast Baptist Church family in Palmetto, Florida.

A memorial service will be held at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington, North Carolina, on September 5, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., with visitation beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Jesse leaves behind a lifetime of laughter, love, and stories that his family will carry forward. His presence made life lighter, and his memory will continue to do the same.
