Jesse Thomas Flake, 86, of Pressley Creek Road, Cullowhee, died Friday, April 20 at Alston Brook of Lexington. A funeral service will be held at 11 am Wednesday, April 25 at Appalachian Funeral Home Chapel in Sylva, by the Rev. Clemmey Queen. Burial will follow at Fall Cliff Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8 pm Monday at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington and from 9:30 to 10:30 am Wednesday, prior to the funeral service in Sylva. Mr. Flake was born May 26, 1931 in Anson County to J. T. Flake and Minnie Seago Flake. He was a graduate of Western Carolina University, where he also received his Master’s Degree. He retired from teaching after many years at Cullowhee High School and later served as an internal auditor at Western Carolina University. He was an active in his community and worked for many years at “Unto these Hills” and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from Western Carolina University. He was also a member of Speedwell Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School. He is survived by his sister, Betty Flake Sink, of Lexington; his nieces, Susan Bryan (Billy) and Jackie Sink, both of Lexington; his great nieces, Jordan Bryan Knott (Ian) of Lexington, and Brooke Bryan Osborne (Scott) of Greensboro and his cat, Midnight.
