On Friday, February 23, 2024 Wanda Jewell Gobble Nicholson went home to be with her Momma and Daddy, Mozelle and Banks Gobble, and sister, Betty Hiatt in Heaven.
A memorial service will be held at Midway Methodist Church, 9795 Old U.S. Hwy 52 Lexington, NC at 2:00 on Thursday, February 29, 2024 by the Rev. Ron Garner. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 in the sanctuary prior to the service.
Jewell was born May 5,1936 in Midway, NC to Banks and Mozelle Wagner Gobble. She graduated from "Nordahi",where she was a basketball star and often featured in The Dispatch. She worked at Western Electric in Winston-Salem, NC where she met the love of her life, Eddie Nicholson. They married in 1955, then in 1961 had one son, Charles Nicholson, Jr. In order to care for Charles at home, she apprenticed at Nance's Flower Shop in Thomasville on Saturdays. After working at Nance's, she opened her own flower shop in the basement of their home in 1965. Soon the business grew and she was able to purchase The Cain Candy building on Highway 52 and opened Midway Florist, where she was owner and operator for about 23 years. She later sold the business to Beverly Williams of Beverly's Florist.
Eddie and Jewell were active members of Midway Methodist Church before they retired in 1988 to Kure Beach, NC to live out her dream of living at the beach she had loved from childhood. She loved fishing, ballroom and shag dancing and traveling. She and Eddie taught dance classes at local senior centers and attended "Dances" every weekend and classes once or twice each week. They met many travel friends, and were fortunate enough to travel extensively.
Jewell also loved her family and attended every baseball game her son, Charles, played in from elementary to high school. She also loved attending softball and volleyball games of her granddaughters, Allie and Holly. They have many fond memories of her teaching them to fish, dance, "shop for bargains", and make cookies.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Eddie Nicholson, her son, Charles and wife, Bonnie, her two granddaughters, Allie Nicholson(fiancé' Cam Wilson) and Holly Nicholson(fiancé' Eric Cheek) and one sister, Brenda Zimmerman(Phil), along with many nieces and nephews. The family would also like to thank her caregiver, Christine Giovannoli.
Memorials may be made to Midway Church or The Davidson County Senior Center, 555 W. Center St. Ext. Lexington, NC 27295
