Jim Webb

January 10, 1930 — January 3, 2014

Mr. James Thomas (Jim) Webb, Sr. age 83 of Sink Farm Road, Lexington, NC died Friday, January 3 at Hinkle Hospice House, in Lexington. A Memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, January 8 at Tyro United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. Burial at Bethel Cemetery will be private. The family will see friends in the Tyro United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall following the service and at other times will be at the Residence on Sink Farm Road. Mr. Webb was born January 10, 1930, in Davidson County, to William (Bill) Webb and Jessie Gregg Webb. He was a graduate of Lexington High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He worked with Duke Power in the Transmission Lines department for 37 years. While in the Navy he was deployed to the Arizona Desert with a bulldozer and instructed to learn how to operate it, beginning a lifelong love of heavy equipment including excavators, cranes, dozers, and tractors. He loved to clear land, knock down trees, dig up stumps and build ponds and bridges. Dad was our family mathematician, historian, and finance manager, filling early morning adding, subtracting and figuring over cups of coffee. A detail artist, he enjoyed drawing blueprints and other scale drawings. A designer and builder, he spent much of his retirement woodworking and building furniture. His construction preference was galvanized steel and bolts. His picnic table frames will stand as a testament to his love for transmission tower steel. He also enjoyed the farm, raising donkeys and cattle. Farm work was his favorite hobby, but he also loved to play golf with co-workers, family and friends. He ultimately built a golf course in the pastures of the farm. He is survived by his wife, Jane Sink Webb of the home; sons James T. (Chip) Webb, Jr. and wife Kathy of Winston-Salem and Jerry S. Webb and wife Theresa of Advance; daughter Joy Welch and husband Bobby of Lexington; grandchildren Casey, Daniel, Nathan, Kathryn, Kirsten and Kelsey. Memorials may be made to Tyro United Methodist Church Building Fund, 4484 South NC Hwy # 150, Lexington, NC 27295
