Our beloved Joan Mitchell left this life on Sunday, January 31 and now rests in the comfort and security of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Joan had been a Lexington, NC resident from 1974-2017, at which time she moved to Homestead Hills Retirement Community in Winston-Salem.

A Memorial Service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, April 18 on the side lawn of the First Presbyterian Church and will be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/davidson.funeralhome. Bring your own lawn chair, dress for the weather, wear your face covering, and come join Joan's family in giving thanks to God for her life and commending her to God's eternal care.

Joan is preceded in death by her husband William E. Mitchell, her daughter Andrea Mitchell Metzler and sisters Carol Schafer and Barbara Theobald  She is survived by her son Peter W. Mitchell and daughter-in-law Susan K. Mitchell of Winston-Salem; son-in-law Dr. Craig Metzler and his wife Linda Metzler of Mooresville, NC; grandchildren Jennifer Beck (Kevin), Bryce Metzler, Alexander Mitchell (Meredith) and Caroline Mitchell (Jackson) and two great grandsons, Grayson Beck and Mack Mitchell.

Joan was born Dec. 19, 1926 in Buffalo, NY, to Margaret and Elmer Theobald. She was the eldest of three daughters. After graduating from Skidmore College in 1948 she began work for the National Gypsum Company at its Buffalo headquarters. There she met the love of her life, Bill Mitchell, who had joined National Gypsum after serving as First Lieutenant in the 8 th Air Force during WWII. They were married in 1950 and enjoyed the next 62 years together until Bill’s passing in 2012.

Along their journey, Joan and Bill moved to Lexington, NC in 1974 after National Gypsum purchased Binning’s Building Products. Bill was named President and later, Chairman. Lexington became home for them and Joan immersed herself into the welcoming Lexington community. She served on the Davidson County Community College Foundation Board for 16 years, holding many leadership positions including President from 1984-85. She also served on the Lexington Memorial Hospital Foundation Board, the Lexington Family Services Board and was the first woman member on the Sapona Country Club Board. Joan will be missed for her enthusiastic contributions to the Lexington Garden Club, Club of the Twelve Book Club and First Presbyterian Church of Lexington.

Joan loved bridge, gardening, travel and the keyboards and was able to play the great standards from memory. She is most certainly playing sweet music at the feast her Lord and Savior has prepared in heaven.
