John Rhodes

John Shaw Rhodes, beloved educator, devoted husband, and cherished friend, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at the Hinkle Hospice House.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm, on Friday, May 31, 2024, at First Baptist Church in Lexington, with the Rev. Dr. Ray Howell, III officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 1 pm until 2 pm prior to the service at the Church.

John was born in Davidson County on January 10, 1932, to the late Charles C. Rhodes and Leita Myers Rhodes. He dedicated 35 years of his life to shaping young minds as an educator at Lexington Senior High School, where he served as the head of the math department. His passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom, as he coached wrestling and officiated matches for 15 years, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of his students and athletes. A veteran of the Army, John served his country with honor during the Korean War. His bravery and dedication exemplified his commitment to serving others. Away from work, John found solace in the serene beauty of nature. He was an avid salt and freshwater fisherman, renowned for his expertise in fly tying. As one of the two founding members of Trout Unlimited, Blue Ridge Chapter, John's passion for conservation and fishing knew no bounds. John's talents extended beyond the waters, as he was a skilled painter who found joy in capturing the essence of life on canvas. He shared his love for art with fellow enthusiasts, including Bob Timberlake and Stuffer Myers. Additionally, he enjoyed square dancing and line dancing, bringing laughter and joy to those around him. In addition to his professional and artistic accomplishments, John was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Lexington, where his faith and fellowship enriched the lives of many. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

John shared 64 beautiful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Hillary Jones Rhodes. Together, they raised their son, Scott Myers Rhodes, and created a lifetime of cherished memories. John is also survived by his brother, Frank Rhodes (Sandi); his two grandchildren, Miranda Dennis (Dakota) and Savannah Rhodes; three nieces; and three nephews.

John Shaw Rhodes will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church of Lexington or to Hospice of Davidson County.
