John Wesley Beck

May 28, 1943 — May 16, 2024

John Wesley Beck, 80 of Davidson County, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Hinkle Hospice House of Davidson County.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at 11:30 am at Christian Baptist Church with Pastor Sam Harvey officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 am until 11:30 am at the church, prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow at Salisbury National Cemetery.

John was born on May 28, 1943, in Davidson County, to the late William (Will) and Carrie Beck. He graduated from Central Davidson High School, class of 1961, and went on to serve his country in the Army during the Vietnam War where he earned three Bronze Stars among other medals and recognition. John was a proud veteran and patriot whose love for his country shined through his sacrifice and service. To honor his commitment to the military and for his 80th birthday, Mayor Karen Alexander of Salisbury declared July 10, 2023 ”John Beck Day” in the city and a flag which was flown over the Capital Building in Washington DC was presented to him.

After his military career, John worked at PPG Industries for 32 years and retired in 2003. He also served as a volunteer fireman for the South Lexington Volunteer Fire Department, and in 1984 was awarded Fireman of the Year. John also served as the Chaplain for the Davidson County Honor Guard and saw to it that other veterans were cared for and honored in a way that showed respect and dignity.

John married the love of his life, Betty Goodman Beck, and was the epitome of a devoted and loving husband. The love he had for Betty was unmatched and will always be a role model of marriage for his family. And in return Betty loved him deeply. Betty pushed him to be his best, and dedicated her life to being his support, she was his rock, advocate, and soul mate.

John was a man of deep faith and devoted to Christian Baptist Church where he served as member of the choir, trustee, and Sunday School Superintendent.

John was an avid fisherman who enjoyed annual trips with his fishing buddies to San Tee Cooper and Buggs Island. He made fishermen out of many and warmly welcomed those who wanted to enjoy the sport alongside him. Bowling was another favorite pastime, and he was involved in various bowling leagues. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers, George Beck and Paul Beck; and four sisters, Lorraine Bradshaw, Maxine Lee, Frances Beck, and Eunice Bradshaw.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Betty of the home; daughters, Connie Snyder (Tracy), Laurie Wheat (Bobby), Lorrie Reynolds (Keith), Heather Morato and Halie Beck all of Lexington. John has four grandchildren, Jennifer, Paris, Brooklyn, and Katie and three great grandchildren, Nevaeh, Kaitlyn and Annie May. He leaves behind a loving, cherished brother; Charles Beck and a sister-in-law, Dee Beck, a host of loving nieces and nephews; extended family and friends, loving neighbors, his church and Honor Guard families.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to their church family for everything they have done and are continuing to do, the Honor Guard for their unwavering commitment to a fellow soldier and veteran and his family, their neighbors and community for their outpouring of love and support.
