He graduated from Lexington High School, and had served in the National Guard. He was owner and Operator of J.K. Cecil and Son Grading where he worked until his illness made it impossible. He was an avid bowler in the Men’s Business League, which he sponsored, and once bowled a perfect 300 with his fellows at the YMCA, was a member of the American Bowling Congress. He was an avid fisherman making many trips to Ocracoke and Hatteras, on the Outer Banks. A lifelong member of Lexington Loyal Order of the Moose, having been Jr. Governor, a one, two and three year Trustee, Moose of the Year and received the Fellowship Degree. He was a member of the Amvets Post 13 and American Legion Post 8, and served in The National Guard. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men and as a young man received his Eagle Scout with his father being Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 200.
Joseph King Cecil, III was born to Joseph King Cecil, Jr. and Hazel Yow Cecil in Lexington,
NC, June 7, 1951. He is survived by his wife Debbie Everhart Cecil, one son David King Cecil and a daughter Jennifer Bivens and husband Toby all of Lexington, he was blessed with four grandchildren whom he cherished, Taylor King Cecil, Madison Rae Cecil and Lucas David Bivens and Katelynn “Ally” Bivens; sisters, Margaret Bowman and husband Willie of Lexington, Prissy Stanley-Lammi and husband Vic of Denver, NC and Scottie Thompson of Lexington; aunt Mattie Cecil Terry of Lexington; one step-sister Caroline Ledbetter of Farmville, NC, one step-brother, Worth Bowman of Angier, NC
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday (6-11-2009) at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Lexington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home from 6 until 8 pm Wednesday and at other times at the home on Wagon Trail Lane, Lexington.
