Joseph Allen Steed

Joseph “Allen” Steed, 77, of Sophia, NC, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, surrounded by loved ones, at his daughter’s home in Lexington, NC.

Born on April 28, 1948, Allen, remained a beacon of resilience and humor, continually sharing jokes, even throughout his battle with lung cancer.

In his early twenties, Allen proudly served in the National Guard, selflessly dedicating himself in service of others. His career path led him into the upholstery business, which began at Heritage Furniture where he learned the trade. He went on to work at Baker Furniture and ultimately retired from Swain Furniture, where he left his mark on the industry.

Beyond his professional life, Allen was deeply committed to his community, particularly through his involvement with the Hillsville Civitan Club, where he was a Charter Member. He served as Club President, Board of Directors, and leader of many fundraisers and service projects. He was passionate about cooking for others, especially known for his BBQ, which became a highlight at major holiday events. His dedication to his family was profound; he cherished his wife Carolyn, ensuring she was always cared for, and took immense pride in his grandchildren, Carmen and Nicole.

Allen is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; daughters, Vicki Nelson of Sophia and Crystal Pfost of Lexington; son, Brian Steed of Baltimore MD; grandchildren, Carmen Nelson of Sophia and Nicole Davis of Winston Salem; and brother, Steve Steed of Trinity. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Williard Steed and mother, Wilma “Bennie” Burge Steed.

A Celebration of Life for Allen will be scheduled at a later date. Allen has requested his body be donated to Wake Forest University School of Medicine to aid in lung cancer research and healthcare education, continuing his legacy of helping others even in passing.
