Mrs. Joyce Fitzgerald Swicegood, 73, of Clay Street, died Sunday, December 30, at Forsyth Medical Center.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2013, at Churchland Baptist Church, where she was a member with the Rev. Ray Nance Howell IV officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at the church fellowship hall.
Joyce was born December 1, 1939, in Davidson County, to Cliff Fitzgerald and Latta Darr Fitzgerald. She was a graduate of Churchland High School, UNC Charlotte and A&T University. She completed graduate work at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a retired principal with the Davidson County Board of Education, having served at Silver Valley Elementary School, Hasty Elementary School, Welcome Elementary School and West Davidson High School. At her church she served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, a member of the choir as well as a member of the handbell choir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Carlton Swicegood, who died on April 23, 2008.
Surviving are her son, Mitch Swicegood and wife, Elizabeth, of Churchland; daughter, Lisa Fisher of Elizabethtown; grandchildren, Nick Swicegood, Colton Swicegood, Blake Donnelly and Brooke Donnelly; sister-in-law, Betty Barnes; sister, Gayle Davis and husband, Willie; niece, Dee Dee Callahan; and nephews, Mark Davis, Glenn Barnes and Mitchell Barnes.
